Intermodality

Objectives

We will outline the potential impact on road, rail, sea and air intermodality, if things continue as they are – including rising fuel costs, fuel shortages, non-interconnectivity, exacerbating rural / urban divide and standardisation issues. New smart technologies, and alternative fuels will have positive impacts on many issues, such as rising fuel costs, but we will use the opportunity to introduce these solutions in a manner which is targeted at helping interoperability and continuity of existing transport sectors and their impact on intermodality. They will help provide an easy transition between modes of transport, enhance future relationships between alternative fuel type (electric, plug-in hybrid, hydrogen, biofuel) and ease the rural / urban divide, while influencing behaviour (eg. distance of journeys), legislative frameworks and economic environment in each partner region. It will aid progress towards standardisation in the Atlantic Area.

Actions

  • Establish the potential impact on road, rail, sea and air intermodality, of what will happen if things continue as they are
  • Examine the future potential impact of the introduction of smart technologies, including alternative fuels
  • Establish and document the relationship between alternative fuel type and rural / urban divide, behaviour (eg. distance of journeys), legislative frameworks and economic environment in each partner region and current progress towards standardisation in the Atlantic Area.

Expected Results

  • A report quantifying the future potential impact of rising fuel costs, fuel shortages and non-interconnectivity
  • A report quantifying the future potential impact and opportunities of smart technologies and alternative fuels on intermodality
  • An increased acceptance of smart technologies and alternative fuels as solutions to a wide range of transport issues
  • A report documenting the relationship between alternative fuel type and rural / urban divide, behaviour, legislative frameworks and economic environment in each partner region, and also established standardisation issues and standardisation required to address intermodality across transport sectors Regional Action Plans addressing intermodality and interoperability of existing transport networks using smart technology and alternative fuels
